Crossing the road in Vietnam!

The traffic in Vietnam is crazy and I often find myself having troubles crossing the road. There are millions of motorbikes just in Saigon alone (I am not exaggerating). I remember one time I was in one of the main roads beside the Saigon River and was just standing there for about 5 minutes waiting to get across. The motorcycles were just ignoring the traffic lights and crossing, they just don’t stop. Eventually, there was a lull in the traffic. I got my camera out and filmed myself crossing the road. Here is what happened...

Crossing the road in Vietnam is pretty scary, you just never feel safe. But after a while, you will start to get the hang of it. The strategy, believe it or not is don't try to avoid the motorbikes, let them avoid you. Just ignore the motorbikes coming at you- look straight ahead and walk at a slow, steady and predictable pace. If you do this the motorbike should successfully manoeuvre their way around you. Also I would avoid crossing when trucks and buses are close by, as they are less agile. Another way is simply to follow a local, stand next to them but let them walk first (if there’s an accident, he will get hit first).
